Ellen is 13 and staying in Alverstoke, Hampshire with her Uncle Hon. George Hastings, her parents and brother.
It is interesting as she is actually staying in "Her Majesty's Royal Naval Hospital". The site in Gosport opened as a Naval Hospital in 1754 and was the last Ministery of Defence Hospital to move to the NHS.
The site is now Grade II listed historic park and is currently in redevelopment. In the 18th century the hospital, along with the main block, contained residences for senior staff, an asylum, administration blocks, a chapel and burial ground. The grounds were surrounded by high brick walls and railings designed to stop patients from going absent without leave.

Grace, Thomas and the family have moved to England. Grace is an only child so the family are living with her elderly father Joshua Wigley Batemen. The census lists Mabel and Edmund but there is no mention of either Thomas Sr or Jr.

The family have four servants living with them - a housemaid, a cook, a parlour maid and a nurse.

The Poupart Family are living on Marsh Farm. William & Sarah have seven children under the age of 18. One servant lives with the family. The eldest son, William 16, lists his occupation as Market Gardeners Asst.

George is garrisoned in the Royal Citadel, Plymouth. He is 22, his occupation is given as Lieutenant Royal Engineers. It notes he was born in India and is a British Subject.

The family are still living with Grace Bateman's father - Joshua W Bateman (a retired secretary to the Duchy of Cornwall). With Grace is Mabel (16), Edmund (15) and Thomas (13) who is recorded as as 'Orde'. There is no record of Thomas Sr.

The family also have three servants living in the house - a house keeper, a house maid and a cook.

Thomas (53) and Ellen (42) are living in St Alban's. The eldest boys are gone but Harry, who is 16, is still at home. They have three servants living in the house.
The census also notes (not pictured) 'Lye House Stables' with two additional staff - a Coachman/Domestic Servant and one other person - it might read Farmer....however this person also lists themselves as an employer.

The Best-Gardner's live in Eaglesbush, a Colliery, in Neath, Glamorgan.
Clement Sankey Best Gardner lists his profession as Tin Plate Manufacturer. He and his wife Annie have two children - five year old Charles Clement Best Gardner and four year old Kate Dallaway Best Gardner.

A useful document where the person taking the census provides a summary of individuals in the area. Unfortunately for Kilpedder East the final page is missing.

From Form A we know the enumerator listed the Vines home as 'House 16'. Form B.1. provides information about the type and condition of the house.

We can tell the house was made of 'stone, brick or concrete' and the roof is 'slate, iron or tiles'. The front of the house has two windows and two rooms. There are no outbuildings or stores on the property. The house is recorded as 2nd class.

The families have joined together and are living in the Downs, Delgany.

Pat Farrell has one child from his first marriage - Christopher.

Elizabeth Farrell (M'Callum/White) has five children from her marriage to Benjamin Henderson:
Benjamin Henderson (15), Samuel Henderson (12), Mary Henderson (10), Eliza Henderson (8), Peter Henderson (6).

Together Pat and Elizabeth have two daughters: Bridget Farrell (2) and Catherine Farrell who is one month old.

Neither parent can read or write and Pat Farrell signs the census with an x

Form B for the house the Henderson-Farrell family were living in.

The house has a thatch roof and two front windows. It has two rooms (total) to shelter a family of 10. In the census it is ranked 3rd class. Form B2 (not pictured) tells us the family have a hen house.

At that stage the house (and that of Mary Farrell next door) were both rented from Richard Graydon a 77 year old farmer born and raised on Tooman Road.

Eliza Devine, sister. Aged 25 she has no occupation listed.
Patrick (Alec) Devine, brother. Aged 20 his occupation is listed as Agricultural Labourer.

All are Roman Catholic.

The family claim to be literate but Michael, the eldest, signs the census with an X.

Donald is 19. He lives with his parents William Poupart and Sarah Seex in Marsh Farm. His occupation is listed as Market Gardener Asst (ditto Alfred & Charles).

Some of his brothers and sisters are living at home - William (26), Sarah (28), Charles (23), Alfred (22) and Ernest (17).

Two servants are also resident - Lily Perry and Rebecca Hollis.

House contains Anna Selina Waller (30) and her three children Mary (7), Hardress (3) and 9 month old Eric. All three children were born in County Tipperary.

The house also contains four staff - a nurse, a nursemaid, a cook and, a housemaid.

William Arthur De Warrenne Waller is not present at the time of the census.

James (34) and Margaret (28) are married for 10 years and live in James home of Snugborough. They have one child - Thomas who is 1 year old. James's mother Honor Staunton lives with them - now a 65-year-old widow.

They also have a 4-year-old boy living with them - he is listed as James Tiernan (presumably Tierney) a nephew.

James was born to John Tierney and Bridget Staunton - John was Margaret's brother, I can't yet confirm if Bridget is related to the Staunton family. Bridget dies as a result of childbirth in May 1900.

Francis died six years ago and the family remains in Tullycommons. All seven children are living at home with Maria (45): Mary Ann (16); John (14); Edward (12); Pat (10); Maggie (9); James (7) and Francis (6).

The house is stone with a thatch roof and two windows in the front of the house. Inside there are two distinct rooms - a kitchen and bedroom. Outside the family have a cow shed.

In 1901 Mary is a widow. She is living with two sons - Edward, 16, who is working as a general labourer and Samuel, 13, who is still at school. Both boys can read and write.

The house is one single room with two windows in the front. The enumerator lists it has 3rd class. Form B2 tells us the house has a barn, a hen house and a stable.

They are living in Drummin East, a large, relatively uninhabited, townland between Priestsnewtown and Downs.

In 1901 Eliza Augusta and Ada Maud have taken residence in Prior Park, Tipperary. They live with their Aunt Jane Selina Waller. All three are spinsters. In five years Eliza will be married to George and leaving for South Africa.

The census is signed by, but not filled in with his information, a Joceyln Waller. At a later point somebody added Wm (William) to his name. I'm not yet sure exactly which 'Joceyln Waller' this is.

House contains: William Vines (Head of Family) 36 and an Agricultural Labourer. His wife Elizabeth is 27 and does not have an occupation listed. They have three children - William 2, and 9 month old twins John and Jane. They house also has a nurse child Annie Keelar, 14. It notes that she was born in Co Meath.
All the adults can read and write.

The building return (form B1) for Kilquade shows William Vines and family to be living on Spring Farm estate.

Spring Farm was owned (and he resided in House 1) by William Joseph Corbett a prominent MP and friend of Charles Stewart Parnell (who also stayed at Spring Farm).

On 1 Dec 1909 Corbett died. His probate went through in January 1909 and everything went to a Thomas M. Corbett, Medical Doctor, Dublin. Spring Farm is sold to a Richard Hudson. In the 1911 census 7 of the 16 houses on the estate are uninhabited. The only family to remain since 1901 is the Price family- although they appear to have moved from House 3 to House 4 - William Vines old home.

This offers a time line (and reason) as to the move to Glendarragh.

Mary Dorothea Waller is now 20 and living with family in Antrim.

John Joshua Rowan is her grandmother Mary Dorothea Stuart Rowan's younger brother. Ellen Augusta (Vaughan) is his second wife.

John lists Mary as his 'adopted daughter' and her (and their) religion is given as Episcopalian and not CoI.

The Henderson-Farrells have moved house - not far, they are still living beside Mary Farrell's house (although Mary is now dead her Grandson James is living there alone).
This house has three rooms, the walls (inside and out) are perishable - wood or mud - and the roof is thatch. In later years (much later) this would be 'upgraded' to sheets of galvanising. The house still has two windows in the front and the census enumerator lists the property as 3rd class.
Outside the henhouse has gone and the family have a shed.
