Census |
2 Apr 1901 Coolnakilly, Glenealy, Co. Wicklow | ![]() William is 7 and Elizabeth is 5. They both attend the local school in Ballylusk while the younger two, 3-year-old Michael and 1-year-old John ("Jack") are too young to attend. Thomas's older brother Patrick, as yet unmarried, is also staying with the family. Their home is made of stone walls with a thatch roof. There are two rooms inside and windows to the front of the house. Outside the house is a single shed. The census enumerator lists the house as 3rd class. The family are renting the property from Ann De Butts. Anne is a 72-year-old English widow and she lives with two unmarried daughters. All three describe her income as being 'derived from stock, etc'. The household includes three servants (a house, parlour and kitchen maid) and a nurse. Outside the family have a stable, a coach House, harness room, cow house, calf house, dairy, piggery, 2 fowl houses, a boiling house, a workshop and two general sheds. The De Butt family also rent a 2nd class house to John Harris. John records his employment as a 'Coachman & Domestic Servant. His property holds a shed and a hen house - which would suggest he is employed by Anne. John, his family and all who live in the main De Butt house list their religion as Church of Ireland, Church of England or Presbyterian. Residence |
3 Apr 1901 Glenealy Lodge, Coolnakilly, Glenealy, Co. Wicklow | ![]() The census does not use conventual addresses but rather provides a number to each house in a townland which it can make it difficult to identify the exact location. In the townland of Coolnakilty, (situated in the district electoral division, DED, of Glencaly) the 1901 census records 7 houses. The O'Brien's live in house 2; the De Butts in house 6 and the Harris family in house 7. In 1854 the Griffith Valuation records 6 houses in Coolnakilly. James Whitstead De Butt (husband of Anne Elizabeth De Butt) as a tenant to Daniel Tighe renting a total of 63 acres, 1 rod and 37 perches. De Butt has one tenant, Daniel McGrath. McGrath has one house and no land. The information provided by Griffith's Valuation can be cross referenced to historic OSI maps. The land occupied by De Butt's surrounds Glenealy Lodge. Later, the National Library would receive the estate papers, administration files and related correspondence of the Tighe Family. Within the collection is 22 letters relating to Mrs A.E. De Butts of Glenealy Lodge cover the period 1877 - 1887. Died |
