Petty Court Session |
8 Feb 1896 Newtownbarry, Co. Wexford | ![]() John and Mary return to the court after an argument with their neighbour William Roche. On February 28th six sheep belonging to William Roche gain entry to land the Doyle's cropped with cabbages. An argument ensues and Mary accuses William of shaking her and waving a gun above her head. In turn, William accuses Mary of once again trespassing on his land, he notes that she did this despite previous cautions, and then while on that land she encouraged her dog to chase and worry his sheep. William requests one shilling to compensate for 'injury done'. All claims are dismissed on merit. John challenges William for allowing his sheep to continue to trespass. The day after the argument, February 29th, twenty-five sheep break into Doyle's land destroying crops. John requests £1 compensation and is awarded 10/. Census |
2 Apr 1901 Ballyredmond, Co. Carlow | ![]() John Doyle is married to Mary Doyle and together they have seven children, only six of which are listed on the 1901 census returns. The three eldest boys, Michael (14), James (10) and Patrick (8) can read and write and are listed as scholars. The younger girls Maggie (5) and Lizzie (4) are too young to read and write but are both listed as attending school. The youngest, Martin, is a little over a year old. The middle child, seven year old Ellen, is residing with her widowed Grandmother, John's mother Ellen, in nearby Huntington. Their home is made of stone walls with a thatch roof. There are two rooms inside and windows to the front of the house. Outside the house is a single shed. The census enumerator lists the house as 3rd class. Outside the property has a piggery and a shed. The family are renting the property from their neighbour William Roache. William records his profession as being a farmer and the 2nd class cottage reflects that. William's house is also thatched but has a total of 5 rooms and three windows to the front. William's property also contains a stable, a cow house, calf house, a piggery, a boiling house, a barn and a shed. His large family is blended from his wife's previous marriage and the house includes a farm labourer. Died |
