Born | 2 Feb 1904 Kilcandra, Co. Wicklow ![]() Census |
2 Apr 1911 Kilcandra, Co. Wicklow | ![]() By 1911 Margaret and Patrick are married for 27 years. Margaret is recorded as having six children born and six children still living - since the last census Mary Louisa, or Louise, has joined the family, but she will not be their last child. The entire family are still living together in Kilcandra. Patrick is still working in road construction, while James (25) and Michael (20) are general labourers. Margaret (15) and Louise (7) are both enrolled in school. Maryanne (23) is also present in the home, without an occupation listed against her she is most likely involved in keeping the house. One person stands out in the family. Pat is now 18, he has no occupation listed against his name nor is he in school. He is the only person in the family listed as 'cannot read' - the Redmond family are all highly literate. The only clue to why this is the case is found in column 15 - the word 'Blind' is barely visible after somebody erased it. Pat was not born blind - it occurred as a young child as he cut twine on the front steps of the house. He may not have an occupation listed against him in the census but as an adult he took over the family farm, running a dairy and navigating the land from memory. The census suggests the family are in the same house. They are now renting from Christopher Byrne, perhaps a son of Walter and their neighbours still include the Doyle's, Hatchell's, Sinnott's. The enumerator still brackets the family home as having '5 or 6' rooms however in this census the family record themselves as occupying five rooms - the house may have been extended as it now records five windows to the front. The family might not list farming as an occupation but their lifestyle is heavily involved in the land - they still have a stable but now have two cow houses, a hen house, a barn and a shed. Died |
