16 May 1951 Kilpedder, Co Wicklow | ![]() In the year before he died Alec worked as a gardener for Mr Peel of the White Cottage, Kilpedder, Co Wicklow. On Wednesday, 16th of May 1951 he attended an inquest into the death of his employer. The following day the verdict was published in the Irish Times. OVERCOME BY FUMES IN HIS MOTOR-CAR A verdict that John Ethelston Peel (39), writer, of the White Cottage, Kilpedder, Co. Wicklow, died accidentally as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning from the fumes of his car, was returned by a jury sitting with Dr. A. T. Byrne, East Wicklow Coroner, at an inquest at Kilpedder yesterday. Michael Heffernan, plumber, said he reported for work at Mr. Peel's house at about 9.20 a.m. on Tuesday, and went to the garage to get the key to the store where he kept his tools. The door of the garage was closed, but not fastened. He noticed the tail light of the car was on and the engine was ticking over. The car was jacked up on the left rear side. He found his employer lying across the back seat of the car. He shook him, thinking he was asleep, but discovered he was dead. A kit of motor tools was on the floor of the garage. Patrick Vines, gardener, said on Saturday Mr. Peel appeared in his usual good spirits and discussed future plans for the garden with him. Miss Millicent Peel, sister, Seaford, Sussex, said her brother served in the British Army during the war and had since been in the Diplomatic service. He was fond of tinkering with cars and at one time undertook, with her, a 2,000 mile journey by car across the Sahara. Dr. T. Prenderville said that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning. In answer to Mr. A. Fitzgerald, representing the relatives, he said he thought Mr. Peel had been dead for more than two hours when the body was found. Kathleen Vines, domestic servant, said Mr. Peel was away in Wexford over the week-end. The garage doors had blown off their hinges on previous occasions. They would swing closed if not bolted down. Guard J. Droney said that he gained the impression that the deceased man had been working on the car. A lighted torch was found on the garage floor. The Coroner said that it would appear that something of a minor nature went wrong with the car on the run back from Wexford and possibly Mr. Peel decided to put it right. In doing so he was overcome by the fumes. Died |
